When I heard you I remembered
that I had forgotten what words can do,
Stood mute below the stage,
Couldnt have moved if Id wanted to;
Your insistent rhymes, your tense arms,
Those sad eyes, jutted jaw spilling nursery lines.
Im all butterflies, I cant unwind,
Wish Id been sober because Id remember the poetry,
But I wasnt, just mumbled incoherently,
Couldnt even tell a stupid story.
We chased sweet smoke all the way home,
And I thought of Pete speaking magic
in his leather jacket,
Pointing out over a watercolour city,
Talking about the wonders of creation,
Making my friend blush just with his pro-noun-ci-ation.
And I curled up on my roof when I got home
and begged my friend to tell me stories to fall asleep to
and he told me of adventures like he'd been born to,
And I swear nothing can do anything like words can do.
