Every Flower You Give To Me

Every flower you give to me
Beyond the tears returns.
As cypress trees shed all their leaves
The almond with the rose is wreathed.
When lilies are so sadly offered,
An amaranth is picked then proffered
To someone loving I never met
To thank the ones that don't forget.
And when in summer the grass is covered,
With celandine and daisy smothered,
The heliotropes are given with love,
But not to those that live above.
And when the sun gilds golden trees
And glisters treasure of jewelled sweet peas,
I know in my heart my love will not last,
For all of these flowers with shadows are cast.
