THROUGH DARKENED WOODS

Through darkened woods two children roam
Lost & scared & far from home
Night encroaches, fears abound
Senses tuned to every sound.
What horror stalks them 'neath the trees?
Was that a cry or just the breeze?
Each fireside tale they've ever heard
Comes now to mind, each chilling word.
'Ghosts & goblins!', the thought takes hold
Their bodies tremble, not through cold.
Second by second their terror grows
The woods come alive with unseen foes
The branch of a tree is a taloned claw
A hole in its trunk a gaping maw.
The wind through the leaves is a monster's sigh
A rustling bush means a beast draws nigh.
There! Up ahead! A glimpse of light
Hearth and home, a barrier to fright.
At last its the cottage, they're almost clear
With a sigh of relief they forget all fear.
SNAP! Horror strikes from midst the trees
Their cries are lost on a treacherous breeze.

Through darkened woods two parents roam
In search of those who've not come home.
Grief encroaches, fears abound
For two lost children, never found.
