THE LEGEND OF THE GHOST PANTHER: SPIRIT OF THE NORTH

The legend is there is a giant cat, great panther that lives far, far in the north, way up at the top of the world, a ghost panther that carries winter on his back. They say Ghost Panther is white as snow and comes prowling around on the north wind when it blows on those dark and frigid winter nights here in the north country. They say he has glowing eyes and a coat of pure, ghostly white. I believe it is so. Though I have never actually seen him, I have heard his howls and wails on stormy winter nights and seen the results of his passing…
There’s a ghost panther
that is white as snow
that comes prowling ‘round
when the north wind blows
on dark and frigid winter nights
with his glowing eyes
and he’s ghostly white;
out of the north he stalks the night.
Ghost Panther, spirit of the north…
From the far north this cat descends,
out of the land of ice and snow,
out of the place of northern lights
yet where day is often dark as night.
You can hear his howl on the wind
on nights when the panther descends
and see his breath all pale and white
on your windows where he breathes at night
and see his shadow on the wall
on winter nights when the snow falls.
He is right outside the door and windowsill
and that is why you feel a chill…
It’s Ghost Panther, spirit of the north,
out of the north where cold winds blow
and he brings with him four feet of snow,
and frost and ice and sleet and hail.
All through the night you can hear him wail;
Ghost Panther, spirit of the north.
His howl is fierce. His breath is cold
as through the night he prowls bold
turning the world all icy white,
but he’ll go home by morning light,
back to the land of ice and snow,
back where the northern lights glow,
where days are often dark as night,
back to his world of ghostly white.
Ghost Panther, spirit of the north,
a ghostly cat as white as snow.
That’s how our winter comes, you know.
