Don't flake out on me

If me and you stick together
we could be pretty special
like Galton and Simpson,
Jack and Vera ,
and I know I'm going to stick at it
like an ageing bank clerk
eagerly anticipating his carriage clock
that he'd proudly display on his mantelpiece
not even slightly irritated by the tock tock tock
the gong every hour
but most people don't make it
through forty consecutive Christmas parties
in the same office
four decades of April fools' jokes
clingfilm on the toilet seat
whoopee cushions on the chairs
most people bale,
start scanning the local paper for new jobs
and I'm worried you will get headhunted
by a new company that opens up in town
and be taken in by the big open plan office
the pot plants in reception
but if you and me stick at it
don't set our sights on unrealistic goals
then we will both get our carriage clocks
a handshake from the CEO
our names in the company newsletter.
