The Object Thingy

I eyed it, and it eyed me back.
I wondered what it was, and I’m pretty sure it wondered what I was as well. I walked towards it carefully, and picked it up, slowly. It was rectangular, and it had my name written on it’s golden skin. I was scared of it, scared of what it might be. What if it was sent here to kill me? I shook it, not caring if it had any feelings, and if it did, that I was hurting them.
It rattled at me, and I dropped it. So, that was the way it warded off hunters, so it wouldn’t become prey. Well, I decided I wasn’t afraid of it anymore. It looked as though it couldn’t move unless someone moved it. That was then that I realized maybe I should be scared of it after all. Bombs couldn’t move on their own, and they were pretty scary. I crept away from it, just in case it emitted some foul thing to harm me.
What was wrong with me? Surely I wasn’t frightened of such a small… object thingy, was I? Evidently, I was. Spiders were small, and some of them could be harmful to the human skin. Mind you, spiders had teeth, and it was the teeth that were harmful if they were injected into the skin. This object thingy looked as though it had no teeth, so it wasn’t like a spider at all. Okay, what didn’t have teeth, but was still harmful? I couldn’t think of anything. I picked the object thingy up again, and peered to inspect it up close. When I moved it, it rattled, but that was the only sound it made. When it was still, it was silent. That bothered me.
I set it back down on the floor, and looked at it. For some reason, I was convinced if I stared it out, it might become afraid of me an scuttle back to wherever it came from. I completely forgot that the object thingy couldn’t move on it’s own.
It sat there for a few seconds. I wondered about going off and leaving it, but I decided that was a stupid idea. If it was harmful, it’ll probably strike then.
“Oh, for God’s sake, Charlene, will you just open it already?” Mum asked.
I sighed, picked up my Christmas present, and tore the wrapping paper off. It was a box of Maltesers.
