CHRISTMAS EVE

Christmas Eve is here again
Goodwill is due to all good men,
To women too, the young as well;
Joy rings out like a Yuletide bell.
A church bell chimes atop its spire
A doorbell draws us from the fire,
To open the door, to fling it wide
Invited guests to welcome inside.
Gathered inside around the hearth
We raise a toast, we talk & laugh,
We drink to the future, we reminisce
Beneath mistletoe we fondly kiss.
Fondly we wave dear friends goodbye
We close the door with tired eye,
The plates and glasses left when they went
Testament to an evening well spent.
The evening over we crawl into bed
Thoughts of the season alive in our head,
Whether or not in Christ's birth we believe
There's joy to be found upon Christmas Eve.
