Mayo and Moonbeams
Harry brought the moon back in a mayonnaise jar. Crammed in so tight it was all the moon could do to crack a smile.
“Geez,” said Sarah. “It was only a figure of speech.”
“A promise is a promise,” said Harry. “Here you go. Enjoy.”
“I didn’t want a literal moon,” said Sarah. “I wanted something on my finger and a honeymoon in Vegas. Not a moon in a mayonnaise jar!”
Harry handed the moon to Sarah and got down on one knee.
Sarah was so shaken by the proposal that she dropped the moon on Harry’s head.
“Ouch!” cried Harry.
“Sorry,” said Sarah.
The moon sighed and shook the glass from his brow.
“Next time,” said the moon, "get her a box of candy.”
The moon made a hasty exit through the window and returned to its rightful place in the universe.
Where it continues to be burdened by romantics and astronaut debris.
