Autumn Vow
When the oestrogen of green has gone,
I’ll still love you as I did in spring;
When the wind turns harsh and night grows long;
While the fires of anthocyanin
Dyed, dead leaves are licking round my heels;
Neither sad nor bitter shall I feel.
I’ll stand firm against the Autumn storms
And Halloween phantoms of every form;
My heart, with wisdom, is ripening;
yet learns, not to drop, but tightly cling.
I’ll love you through all fall and winter too;
until a child bursts from the bones of you.
Impressions of the seasons
Summer runs through memory;
kids with muddy hands mark walls and carpets;
ladybird prints on your palm
are washed away by time and tides of sweat.
Autumn leaves leave prints like Christ,
walking the path trod by the river Ayr;
great bear tracks cross autumn skies.
Under times tread, even they’ll disappear.
Birds print chinese poetry
and cats print bold adventures in the snow;
snow plants paw prints on the air
but, under times tread, all their footprints go.
Where time walks, Spring buds begin;
April rain runs through shoeprint labyrinthes;
bright kittens are being born
and, through new life, parents leave lasting prints.
Autumn and Eve
Autumn born, full moon faced
and naked as a tree,
I grew to love each new Autumn
as if it were born from me;
love every leaf that bowed to earth,
soft as an infant’s tread;
the halo glow of xanthophyll,
carotene bronzed spear heads.
Umber, amber, goldenrod
and rust, so many hues;
a puzzle of fingers, stars and hearts
to keep the winds amused
and ripening apples, like nipples to suckle,
reminding me of Eve,
the first mother and scientist,
for whom, we must not grieve.
We must not weep for Autumn;
must not sob like collared doves.
She’s the mentor who has taught me
about ever verdant love;
the brazen Earth that howls at death;
the velvet Earth’s new antlers, raised;
the veil strewn Earth’s bare bark of truth.
Let the many hued Goddess be praised!
Ishtar, Isis, Astarte and Eve:
the many arms of naked trees
that dance to rain-drum and wind-drone
and bear new wisdom for me.
