Christmas Daze

Mother’s got her pinny on
The coals are glowing red
And ruffled feathers flying
The robin cocks his head.
He’s after tasting of the mix
My fingers in the bowl
Licking round with deep delight
The scold is worth the goal.
Posties knocking at the door
Like confetti sprawl the cards
You’ll not catch me again
I’m beating you by yards.
Will it be from Aunty Sal?
A ten bob note will buy
Apples red and orange bright
Or mincemeat for the pie.
And after that some pennies left
We wish for sugar mice
But if they cost a penny more
Then chocolate bars are nice.
But oh the dreams are in my head it’s years gone by instead
Since once I dreamed of snow and ice
And got the rain instead.
So give me back my Christmas Daze
I’ll bother you no more
We can pretend the years are naught
Tis three score years and more.
But oh the tree that glistened with
The tinsel and the lights
And mum was here and dad as well
And safe were then the nights.
Tumbling like puppies in a mess of snow
We thought our selves so fleet
And glazed the frosty slippy slide
With tin trays on our feet.
And oh the dreams were in my head it’s years gone by instead
And all I get for Christmas now
Are echoes in an empty head.
