Sound sleep in Stormy night
P k Routray
In India there lived a rich farmer
to help in the farming he used to engage many a menial labor,
but he engages one round the clock and on annual basis
to look after daily chores and to meet any unforeseen crisis,
he stays in the farmer’s house to look after the jobs after the sun set
to ensure the security of crops and the cattle folks to be fed before rest.
He conducted an interview
to select the best among the attending few
to his question “ what is your special ability?”
Some told “we have much strength and stamina”, some told “we are brainy and crafty’
but one of them told “I sleep soundly at night,
immaterial whether there is storm or the cyclone does hit”.
As the answer was unique and different,
It appealed to the peasant.
He appointed the man called as Harry,
He was happy with Harry’s performance and had no such worry.
One night a storm and rain came all on a sudden,
All the farmers were at loss, for such thunder shower, they had not taken any precaution.
This farmer was also worried and searched for Harry,
found Harry sleeping soundly without any semblance of worry.
With much difficulty he got up at the call of the Master,
listened to the queries of the disturbed master out of anger,
on the possible losses because of storm and rain,
he smiled and told everything is safe, he is certain
before evening he finishes his jobs
expecting such an uncertainty to occur at odd hours causing many heart throbs.
“Not to leave today’s job for tomorrow” is the underlying tone of Hurry’s tale.
“Sleep soundly in a stormy night” as the morale this story does dwell.
