Look around
and you will see the same as he

From the first breath
we impose
ten thousand years
of civilisation
insecurity
and fear
upon innocent souls

We introduce
impatience
intolerance
and violence

Teach them
disappointment
loss of hope
Build esteem
and knock it down

We show them
how to hate

We take what
God created
and we break it
piece by piece

We drag them
from Paradise
and deliver them to Hell

When the job is done
we hand them the baton
and ask them to run
A family
A school
A prison
A church
An army
A country
A value system
and we trust them to make it work

Then we ask God’s blessing
on this troubled world

I ask for Peace to come to this bench

Pia, Harvey and Verdana, thank you for your wonderful words. A number of things brought this one out. Particular to general again. What we do to our kids, what they do to theirs, what the whole world of socialisation does to screw up human beings. Parenthood is the art of screwing up the next generation (did I say that first?). Small children are not just cute, they are practically hang-up free - the way we all should have been. And it's the adults that run the world! Scaaaary... Thank you cherry-picker. :-)

Indrani Ananda There's a whole lot of truth in this poem, Parson. But how do we ever get out of the constantly repeating scenario? Most people's hang-ups can be traced back to over-puritanical parents or mindless traditions going back to the forgotten past. And what we are required to learn in order to pass exams to enable us to get some mindless job. All well-depicted here. Indrani.

Hi Indrani, the pessimist in me says that this is the situation we are saddled with. Human frailty. The optimist would say we can educate our way out of this, but we seem to be going in the opposite direction at the moment. We almost came close to catching up with many so-called 'Developing' countries in terms of educational standards (including literacy) at one stage, but that seems to have been abandoned to be replaced with workplace skills training on the cheap. The belief in education has been dropped (unless you pay school fees). So, currently, I am not optimistic. Perhaps religion could have filled the gap, but it hasn't. Kev
