UNDISCOVERED PLANET

i am a lonely planet
as for title, i have none
i'm in a distant galaxy
a slave of foreign sun

i'm hoping an astronomer
will put me on the map
so i can join society
and close this dreadful gap

i do not long for visitors
but recognition, yes
a name for this forsaken speck
so folks won't have to guess

i hope i do not twirl away
without a friendly poke
a colorless non-entity
an interstellar joke

my surface is quite steady
and my atmosphere's so right
oh can't you see me wave at you
a soft pulsating light

so hear my plea, astronomer
don't mean to raise a fuss
but we could make the headline news
imagine both of us

i'd gladly take your given name
like i'd become your wife
and you would be applauded
in your scientific life

for me to live my life alone
would be a mighty blow

across the inky depths of space
my anxious voice i'll throw
