In 1947 I came from Atherton Warwickshire and lived in Eastfield Crescent then we later moved into Allen Road.
I went to the Infant School and I must say that I enjoyed it. I remember they had air raid shelters there. I then went to the Girl’s Junior School and they had a gym club and also a good church club on a Friday night. The Priests I remember at the Church were called Father Matthews and Father Scorer. I enjoyed going to church. I then went to the Mulso Secondary School and I was there until I was fifteen. There always seemed to be plenty of clubs here what with the brownies and sea cadets, scouts etc.
I married in my teens and then went to live in Rushden coming back to live in here when I was twenty six.
I remember the blue a box which stood at the Cross Roads and dead opposite there was a clear running stream and we all used to go down there to paddle as well as going down the Mill.
Opposite Jim Gibbards cottage in Station Road was an ironstone building and this was where the school canteen was. The girls used to walk up the hill for school dinners. Boys and girls were totally segregated even in the playground and later there was a white line. I remember a Miss Evans as well as a Miss Lindley. I think back to the fish shop on Rose Hill, the Co-op Groceries on Irthlingborough Road There was also a Co-op butcher where the beauty shop is in Church Street and then the Co-op Men’s Outfitters.
There was also a ladies drapery store on Wellingborough Road (which is now a bike shop).
I also remember Johnny Kitchen starting up his store. I recall going to the pictures to watch a film about Hilary climbing Mount Everest. I think back fondly to when the carnival went round our streets followed by a torchlight parade the shops we used to have such as the Co-op wet fish shop
Terry & Linda
We moved here in June 1998 from Milton Keynes having first looked round Raunds, Ringstead, Milton Keynes, Higham Ferrers and Irthlingborough before making the final decision having liked what we saw in Finedon.
We like the quietness here and generally speaking people are friendly and we have good neighbours. We feel that there are enough facilities regarding basic needs and you could manage if you did not drive. We have shops, pubs; antique shops which we feel generate custom. We would have thought a tea shop opening regularly here maybe somewhere in the High Street would be a good idea.
In Chillier times in the seventies
It would be nice to see plants and flowers in Wellingborough Road as there seems to be no colour.
