The Brave Little Robin (An Autumn Carol)

The Robin in the Autumn sings
a different kind of song;
different from the Summer and Spring
when days were bright and long.
Its tune becomes a wistful one
as autumn time appears
for it knows it must soldier on
through cold days of the year.
But while he seems to sob in grief
it is his battle cry
for unlike crimson autumn leaves
Robins refuse to die.
Red as a soldier’s uniform
is his broad, blazing chest;
living, a duty to perform
and he will do his best.
Though days may grow more grey and bleak
and fields may fill with snow;
armed with no more than claw and beak
he’ll face his frosty foe.
Whether winter be harsh or chill;
the robin will be strong
and, while winter winds whistle shrilly,
sing his brave, bright song.
