SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE SCREAM LOUNGE (IP)

In Croydon at night-time we’re walking the street;
With friends of all nations who come here to eat.
So many restaurants twinkle and beckon;
Fifty kebab shops alone, I should reckon!
Small grocers still open though well after ten
So much to take in – I feel sixteen again!
Music is blaring and fairy lights dazzle
Groups of girls giggle, all out on the razzle.
There’s kids on the pavement gone out for a fag;
Though I’ve not smoked for years I could kill for a drag!
I’ve had a few drinks and I feel I could fly –
But it’s just the excitement that’s making me high!
I’m wide eyed and tipsy as we push through the crowd
Good job I’m half deaf now – this music’s so loud!
As I stand by the stage full of anticipation
I’m feeling the buzz now, am drunk with elation
The bassist strikes up as a man takes his stand –
My son’s just the singer in a Rock n Roll band.

A poem full of atmosphere and
A poem full of atmosphere and longings - "So much to take in – I feel sixteen again!" - and also of pride in the achievements of one's offspring: "My son’s just the singer in a Rock n Roll band." Whether the poem is autobiographical or not it has many touches of real life. Good use of couplets.
Best, Luigi

Hi Linda.
This is bursting with excitement and pride along with the joy of experiencing that youth of heart that never really leaves us. Your poem is as lively and colourful as the lovely photo.
Enjoyed.
