Dispensing

The same sets of words keep clinging together.
I dispense them to my users
like little toys in plastic balls.
They all see the shiny dials and the colours on the outside
and want what's inside.
They are disappointed, though,
at what turn out to be flimsy, tacky objects,
when seen up close
which are soon forgotten and lost under couches.
Still, I work hard in my cramped corner,
giving them out,
always ignoring – or pretending to ignore –
the sign on the wall above me.
It looks for my replacement;
the better version of me, if it's anywhere to be found.
I'm not too worried though.
That advert's been up there for years.
It's so dusty you can barely read it.
