In the Distance of Space

An outline of left-behind trees
reveal larger timber
has been harvested for
paper-plates and newspaper sheets,
front-end loaders
bringing their prize
to lumbermen waiting --
then loaded trucks
heading off to mills
with their catch-of-the-day.
A new-growth generation
displays young limbs
as birds of various sizes
sprint from castaway logs to
spreading branches, surveying
clear-cutting left by man --
nature continues to present
ravines of wonder,
clumped rock scattered
as puzzles upon the hillside,
shrubs in mottled colours
and hills over which sun
leapfrogs -- memories of today
safely tucked away.
