Bedroom Sonnet

When I was small the world was smaller still:
Green meadows rolled across my bedroom floor;
I'd watch the sun climb up the window-sill,
Then o'er the bedstead dip behind the door.
Swift hares pursued by foxes, spinney-bound
Would glance up at the new becoming moon
Then leaves would fall and scatter all around -
My chill breath told that winter followed soon:
The clock unticking marked the end of time;
The window sketched a lake of frozen dreams:
No restless nature scratching for a rhyme:
The winter's here and all is as it seems.
My blankets rimed with frost, I'd slumber then
And dream that spring would never come again.
