1st Verse:
I see the young maid bending down
to pick a violet from the ground
and when she picks that gentle bloom,
I see her smile at its perfume.
Oh how I wish I was that flower;
that, within me, I had such power;
a flowers gentle charm and grace
to put a smile on her sweet face.
Chorus:
I envy every golden beam
of sun that touches her,
touches of what I can but dream
her face so pure and fair.
I envy, too, the summer breeze
brushing, as it blows by,
‘gainst her soft hair, her arms, her knees
while I must sit and sigh.
2nd Verse:
I see the young maid listening
as, on a branch, a robin sings
and, when its joyful song, she hears,
I see her face so filled with cheer.
Oh how I wish I was that bird,
that twas my song, not his, she heard;
if I could charm her with my song,
for her, I’d sing all summer long.
Chorus:
I envy every golden beam
of sun that touches her,
touches of what I can but dream
her face so pure and fair.
I envy, too, the summer breeze
brushing, as it blows by,
‘gainst her soft hair, her arms, her knees
while I must sit and sigh.
