It was Charlie Bear's first train ride! An adventure into the great big world. He felt a bit scared but really he couldn't wait. There were all new sounds and noises in the station. Big steel wheels squeeling carraiges shaking and bumping, porters calling and peddlars were selling cooldrinks and sweets and packets of chips. It was a commotion. There were some announcements and:
Bell- GONNNG! Platform 3 Destination Toy Land! Happy Forest First Stop! Departure at 7h30
Teddybears All aboard! All aboard!
He was on a sunday school outing and it was the first day trip on his own. Charlie Bear had to wear glasses the frame was black and the round lenses really thick it made his eyes look big. He was an awkward clumsy little bear but very cute he was furry and friendly and he liked laughing and smiling and he liked reading children's books.
On the platform there were many other teddybears too scurrying and scuffling around and jostling and bumping into others. Announcements echoed through the station:
GONNNG! Platform 3 South-Bound Departs!
After opening the stuck window Charlie and his compartment mates waved goodbye joyfully. Alone he felt now he was and Miramdam with his little brother waving as the train was off and picking up speed.
Little Jack had to stay behind he was too small next year he would be old enough. Parents and grown-ups were not allowed it was only the teachers. Charlie was on the first day trip on his own. Miramdam held Jack on her hip with Charlie squinting and waving. Miramdam was beautiful she was strong and caring. Little Jack had to stay behind he was too small next year he would be old enough. Parents and grown-ups were not allowed it was only the teachers.
There were the sounds and noises of a steam train, a jostle shudder shake shake rattle and roll whisstsle and the locomotive puff puff puff puff toot-toot!
He shared the compartment with three other bears the ride wasn't so long so they wouldn't sleep. In the corridor he pressed his face against the small window to see from the other side of the train. Factories houses streets lamp posts passed and soon the countryside trees and clouds and fields swiftly went by.
The real soft spot was the pretty little Doreen. He felt his heart thumping as Doreen passsed him in the corridor. The carraige shook and bumped roughly. With the swing and swaying she bumped into Charlie quite hard as she passed and his spectacles went flying but saved by little Doreen. She wiped them clean and put on his nose with a saint sweet smile. She was a really really nice girl bear. She was warm soft gentle and cuddly. A bit older and very pretty and she was always helpful.
Charlie Bear was now without Miramdam or Daddy Bear but he forgot soon and yes how he enjoyed the stream train!! He felt nervous and alone but braved with his school friends around, he felt safe with the sunday school teachers, a bit bigger older bears and for Charlie's carraige was the merry Miss Margaret. Miss Margaret was kind and she was clever and friendly but she was a bit bossy. She knocked at the door just checking up and counting the passengers. She spoke loud at Charlie who had his head stuck out the window. He could get hurt or lose his spectacles.
Takka-takka Takka-takka! carraiges sang while the scenery passed. In front winding around the bend with the tracks you could see the locomotive and smoke and steam and the sounds of a train with that long whistle wining and that strong locomotive up ahead Puff-puff! Puff-puff! Puff-puff!
Then the sky became grey and clouds were hiding the sun. It started drizzling. Charlie in their compartment sat on the bunk bench looking ahead dreamily, and at the big rain drops as they ran across the pane. The mist and cold air fogged up the window. He wrote with his finger- mmm. Soon the summer shower was past and the sun shining again it was lovely weather. Clickety-clack clickety-clack! Huff-puff! Huff-puff! Toot tooot to-oot!
The teddybears were very excited as Happy Forest was nearing! How thrilling! Noises squueeeel clang clang ssquueeel bump bump Bump. Stop!
Announcement: Railway Stop Happy Forest! All bears land Platform 2!
Happy shouting running and running about and merry shouts of cheer! Yyyyeeeeeeeeeehh!! Let them loose it's picnic time and games for little bears!
The Teddy Bears' Picnic!
If you go down to the woods today you're sure of a big suprise
If you go down to the woods today you'd better go in disguise!
For every bear that ever there was will gather there for certain because
Today's the day the teddybears have their picnic!
Every teddybear who's been good is sure of a treat today
There's lots of marvelous things to eat and wonderful games to play!
See them gaily gad about they love to sing and play and shout!
They never have any care
Beneath the trees where nobody sees they'll hide and seek as long as they please
'Cause that's the way the teddybears have their picnic!
At six 'o clock their mommies and daddies will take them home to bed
Because they're tired little teddybears
If you go down to the woods today you'd better not go alone
It's lovely down at the woods today but safer to stay at home!
