"I've found Trevor!" she said.
"Don't you mean 'treasure'?"
"No. Trevor."
The sand flew and the spade was a blur. A dry, throaty groan emerged from the hole.
"Hello, Trevor."
"How long have I been buried here?"
She turned to Mum. "Mum...?" she said.
"Twelve years," said Mum.
"Twelve years."
"It feels like longer."
She carried on digging, until Trevor was able to sit up and brush himself down.
"What have you been doing down there?"
"I made some new friends."
"Who?"
"Jeff the jellyfish. Brian the barnacle."
"They sound nice."
"They're a pain in the bum."
"Oh."
"I mean literally."
"Come on," said Mum. "Time to go."
"What about Trevor?"
"He can't come with us."
"Why not?"
"He won't fit in the car."
"Mu-u-u-u-um!"
"No. And that's final."
Trevor started walking towards the sea.
"Where are you going?"
"Home," said Trevor.
