Changing Rooms

I consider the room with a critical eye. The paint is peeling in places and faded on the wall where the sun shines in through the small, high, window. A repaint, quality curtains and matching lampshades clearly a necessity. Some new furniture too. Maybe one of those pretty Victorian washstands complete with a marble top - ideal for the age of the building – and a fancy dressing screen for the corner. Re-decoration would require some negotiation as the sharing of living space has revealed some differences in taste.
Good at design and handy at DIY I’d get pleasure from the activity.

‘Pack your stuff Peterson. You’re moving to D Wing.’
I do as I'm told, nod to my cellmate, and follow the prison guard. I don’t doubt that my new accommodation with be as dingy and grey as the six-by-eight I'm leaving.

I really like this short piece, but maybe I'm biased having worked in Prisons (education - creative subjects) for many years.
