Fait accompli

If you'd told me how it was gonna be
bullet-pointed my life for me to see
relaid the suffering, and the pain
I'm not sure I'd have spoken to you again
would have run, drowned in liquor
drank some more till I got sicker
hitched a ride to far away
mad old driver forced me to pray
fought my demons, begged them to leave
sought salvation, some reprieve
to meet a lady who let me go
who kicked me hard and very low
did what I shouldn't in search of the buzz
weakened body, mind a fuzz
hazy days, smog for breath
left me choking towards my death
***
earth orbits later, I prepare to land
scrunched up paper still in my hand
brace! brace! known somehow
self-fulfilling, too late now
***
If you told me how it was gonna be
I would disagree.
Face my mirror, bear the strain
Made a choice to speak to myself again.
