The Pain of it All

 

I saw pain written

across her face. A journey’s

life for all to see.

Some wounds so deep

thankfully not missed. Her

adopted grocery cart

filled with empties.

A nickel a throw –
too bad

the recycle folks are

on the other side of town.

These worn out shoes

just have to make the trip. And

away she goes.

Thanks, Philip. Saw this lady the other day and in spite of it being 2018 in a little town in Truro, Nova Scotia the same type of sub-poverty  existed when I worked in Social Services in Ontario in the late 1960's and 1970's. Our society today is one that easily disregards the homeless, elderly and young children. Too often we warehouse our problems and never really try to be meaningful or truly helpful. Our rules of law protect people to the extent they can continue to live a shabby, lonely life and unless one performs a crime, help of any worthwhile description is not available.
