Silence lasting

No schedules,

Submissive

To wild

Gathering

Of sheep,

 

Where

Mice in

Meadows

Of green

Hideaway

From

Kestrel.

 

We too

Nestle

Like

Secrets

Retreating

From

Humanity,

 

Watch

Mounds of

Clouds

Resembling

Breasts of

Soft white milk

Transform;

Connecting

As one,

 

Now an

Island

Where nests

Our retired

Thoughts

And dreams,

Up here on

Barbury Castle.

Sounds a soothing spot, lying in the grass looking at the sky. I think we did walk there a few years ago when the cowslips were out. Rhiannon

Thank you so much insert,

since my partner's retired we've been doing a lot of walking. It's so amazingly peaceful up there and the scenery too.

I've managed to write 31 chapters to my story so far, but I'm finding it hard to finish because it covers a childs growing years. I don't really want to put it up until it's done, then I can go back over and edit. I'm over the moon that you remembered and I hope that when I do put it up it will be worth waiting for.

The cherries were a lovely surprise too, thank you.

Hi Rhiannon,

you know it's so quiet up there, all you could hear at times was the wind. The isolation is breath taking. if you've been there you'll know exactly what I mean.

My partner was telling me about the little isolated villages that exsisted in the fortified earth works, it was so interesting and inspiring.

Hi Jenny

I haven't been on ABC for a long time, and Rhiannon told me that you had written a poem about Barbury Castle. So I came on to read it and found it very lovely.

My son is now living with me again - after 20 years of being in America. He very much wants to walk the Ridgeway, so we have booked for a few days near Avebury at the end of the month.  He is a keen walker, so may well be going out on his own some of the time. I wonder if Barbury Castle is easy walking distance from Avebury? I think my limit is about 5 miles. We won't have a car and will be coming from Manchester to Swindon by train and then getting a busy to Avebury.

Good afternoon Di,

I'm so glad you liked those lines. It certainly is a retreat from humanity especially as we only saw two other people when we were up there, but they didn't hang around very long and then we were alone again, just gazing out at the miles of  beautiful scenery.

The people that dug out those ditches in the stoneage must have been so strong and hard working, the mounds would have to keep out the enemy along with the harsh weather conditions, I felt tired just thinking about it.

Any way I'm glad you enjoyed my poem and many thanks for letting me know.

Hi Jean,

it's great to hear from you again. There are some beautiful walks around Avebury, but it's going to be about five to six miles to Barbury Castle, so my partner tells me. There is a bus from Swindon to Wrougton and is about three miles to walk to Barbury Castle, I don't know if that helps.

My partner said you should buy Ordinance Survey Map 173 or 174.

Thanks Jenny for your help.

I think probably we will concentrate on the things closer to Avebury, and then maybe take a bus to Stonehenge area.  We only have four days. I sure hope the weather isn't too bad. Can't say I am looking forward toit. But I might spend some time in Calne, which is where two of the people I have written books about came from. One was the mistress of the workhouse there, and the other married my husband's gg grandfather. They apparently have a heritage centre, so I might be giving them information as well as getting some from them.

I haven't written anything worth posting for ages. But maybe I will get into it again. I will see if my trip to Avebury inspires me.
