Christmas Kindness

With the stimulating fragrance of spicy candles, I was struck by how clear recollections of that perfect Christmas burst into my memory. Like an animated child I was armed with gifts that day, feasting with excited eyes on a house overflowing with kindness and love.

 

Wreath upon front door, swathed with joyful spirit to all who enter here, remembering rooms festooned with decorations, a tree draped in tinsel and twinkling lights.

 

Welcomed by grandparents...though not mine I wish they were, she with a soft gentle voice that would melt any heart, he with a strong understanding of the young yet always attentive to his darling wife.

 

Granddaughter returned from university, unable to contain her smile of excitement, chatting endlessly of chance meetings with frost in chilly air, loves young gathering for the season, plunging into chance adventures, places to go friends to meet.

 

Twelve of us there were around that table which was heaving with festive food, gifts neatly wrapped with just a hint of ribbon here and there, as I flopped into a bean bag to open mine.

 

Then in early evening with kisses on cheeks...saying fond goodbyes, I made my way home to a lonely flat, but with a beaming grin that said:

this was one of the best Christmases ever.

A happy picture. A warm happy family is such an encouragement to all around, and can welcome in others into its arms. It's often not families with lots of money, and often those who have had many of their own sorrows and troubles to work through, who find contenement and generosity and sympathy for others. Hi Rhiannon,

they were such a lovely couple who lived in my neighbourhood at the time. It was when I was a single parent and my son was at his dad's for Christmas. Like you said, they didn't have much money, but enjoyed life and had a lot of community spirit, as soon as they found out I would be on my own they welcomed me into their home.
