You bombarded me with platitudes
until my bunker shook
until my nose was filled with
mustard gas and lexicography
Your precious moral turpitude
scored a direct hit
peppering me with shrapnel
and genteel verbosity
You shouted ‘dive’
and delivered a type 93 torpedo
and a list of competitively priced estate agents
Take your semi automatic rifle
and
your Clinique makeup remover
your grenade launcher and your
Mac superfine blusher
your stab vest and the red silk dress that no longer really
fits you
Everything that was here
is now there
behind enemy lines
between the border patrol
and the gastropub
that used to be a wine bar
that used to be a gastropub
You said ‘fire in the hole’ and
‘I love you but not
that kind of love’
perhaps it was the kind that only soldiers
understand
when a war ends
There is no battlefield
There is no victory
or defeat
But I do
surrender
