Blues, Guns and (maybe) Sham

There is nation that loves guns.
It is for defence, they unanimously cry.
One look at us and the enemy runs,
but if he doesn't we shoot the bad guy.

Even women who are full of charm
brandish weapons on the firing range
as they don't think there's any harm
and don't believe that it is strange.

Though in the sixties it was all the rage
to talk of peace and flower power
in history's books there's a new page
saying that the world has turned sour.

What is needed is a radical solution:
disenfranchise those in opposition
who are clamouring for a revolution
and just engage in a war of attrition.

Let uniformity of thought be the norm,
free-thinkers have to be curtailed;
if to our principles they don't conform
in our mission we will have failed.

We must stay close to our allies,
send them arms so that they can
fight the foe who is telling lies
and belongs to a cult or a clan.

Freedom must be the watchword,
for the few but not for the rest
of the uncivilised world.
We are unique and we're the best.

Hi Luigi,

you know I've never seen a gun in real life, leave alone hold one and hope I never do. Even when I was in Florida the police kept them well hidden in the tourist area. It was the one thing that frightened me about holidaying there, but thankfully my fears were unnecessary. Maybe I'm held back by fear, but I would never have ventured out into places that didn't feel safe.

I hope in my life time that myself, family and friends never have to carry guns, I can't think of anything worse and that breeds fear into me.

Love Peace and Happiness always. Like you say, we're unique.

Hello Jenny, it must have been a relief not to have encountered any problems during your holiday in Florida.
One should not be restrained by fear to explore what a place has to offer but unfortunately there are areas too dangerous to venture into and need to be policed, While it is comforting to observe that weapons were not on display, the knowledge that guns are there is troubling. I share your dislike and fear of guns and hope that British bobbies are not routinely armed.

No Jenny. It was mainly about guns and the use of. This version was intended to be a satire and the antithesis of sentiments expressed in the original poem. I was contrasting the peace loving generation of the sixties to the more confrontational one of today with an emphasis on the proliferation of weapons across the pond and the dubious justification they are for self-defence, We have all heard about the many mass killings in American schools and it is my view they  should clamp down on the availability semi-automatic and high velocity guns. A similar situation is developing in this country but with knives and it is equally disturbing.
My argument went on to infer that arms could also be used to subdue opposition and create a fertile ground for dictatorship with all the consequences. 
I still believe to be 'a child of the sixties' and 'flower power' suits me fine.
As you said: Peace and happiness.

Sadly very relevant piece Luigi. The argument about having them for defense is something which continues to baffle me. When will the time come when a gun becomes an ugly anomaly from the distant past? A killing machine for flesh which is fragile enough in anybody's world.

I have long argued with some American fellow writers about gun restrictions but to no avail, Jane. They seemed convinced of the need of guns possession for 'protection'. My point that if everyone was unarmed, like me, the threat of violence would be minimised didn't make an impact. I too was baffled by their stance on that matter. It looks as if other countries, like New Zealand, following the latest atrocity, are considering banning dangerous guns to ensure public safety. Let's hope the States see sense and follows suit.

 . . . It's the bullets. 

I mean guns are useless without bullets. Bullets should be very difficult to obtain and very expensive. 

It won't stop the killing but it might reduce the problem.
