Witness to a dream

I witnessed you there
on the pier
your hair alight with early summer
spinning in the breezes of your thoughts
eyes pressed to where the seas kiss the skies

I witnessed you conduct the gulls 
as if kites on strings
aiming higher 
higher than I'd ever seen
towards wind-picked heavens 

I witnessed you edging further out
to where the waves formed shadows
where your face turned to white water
your symmetry unhinged
by something landlocked

I witnessed you at the stern
screened off from a horizon
carrying on your shoulders
something I saw you leave
behind
