What do we care
if they close down a lofty posting hall
and give us a window at Smith’s?
It’s all about getting a letter delivered
on time and at lowest cost,
making efficiencies, cutting waste.
Human life distils to this.
And soon we’ll set a price
for the scent of summer rain,
for Ursa Major turning above,
for the touch of a lover’s lips.
Somewhere, perhaps,
somebody already is.
