Thirsting For Autumn

Dear diary...it's weekend of the 17th and 18th July 2021.

This heat is so overwhelming it leaves me drained and longing for cooler days.

 

Call of the north brings a symphony of whistles that catch my breath, I imagine windows opened to coasting gales, rattling doors as restless trees swaying in hypnotic dance, share in this yearning for autumn chills to cool the spirit.

 
As I edge towards October with eagerness, here and now inside is where I need to be, away from itch and scratch, flesh crawling with ants that climb my legs, while pesky flies this heat be their joy.
 
I understand the magic of nature has come alive within our garden, this is their time not mine, yet patience of oppressive heat sweltering leaves me breathless with no peaceful sleep, just restless slumbers.

It's hot here, must be much, much worse down south! I am so paranoid about flies biting me in the woods I must look like a morris dancer :0) I hope you have respite soon. As always you look at things selflessly, you put it beautifully "I understand the magic of nature has come alive within our garden, this is their time not mine,"

Hello Di,

you know the older I get,  the more I dread each year we get this heat, it's so intense and I just can't face going out, so stay inside with the curtains closed. I sat just outside our back door in the shade on Saturday evening, and got attacked by loads of ants, they were crawling on my feet and up my legs, they're so quick, that night I was itching thinking I'd bought them into the house and they were still on me, it was like something out of a horror film, now I'm paranoid about going in the garden, I just stand at the window and watch them crawling...brrr! Makes my skin crawl.. 

Then like you said about the flies, we have the same thing here, I suppose it's because our garden's wild and there's loads of wildlife in our miniture woodland at the bottom of the garden. I wouldn't be without it though, it's been a godsend the rest of the year, just not able to go down there during this hot spell.

Sorry to here about those flies your way, horse flies are the worst, then there's the midges biting. Hope you are sleeping better than me, it's a nightmare at the moment because there's no escape. 

Oh, well you take care and sleep well.

Even in milder 'hot' days, I've always automatically stayed in the house shade and enjoyed just seeing it from indoors. This is a bit more difficult to keep cool even indoors though! But on Saturday evening, we did manage to go our quite late in the evening, and climb through some shaded wood, and that was pleasant. Rhiannon

After I got carted off to hospital with heatstroke last year, my kids are firmly telling me I'm not allowed to do anything that might break a sweat this summer! You do put it so well - out there, it is their time and not mine. Like you, I'm waiting for the autumn.

Hi Rhiannon,

glad I'm not the only one staying indoors. It sounds like you had a pleasant walk on Saturday, it's good to know you at least managed to get out. 

Having a rant I know doesn't really help the situation, but I just needed to record the weekend in my diary for future reference of the weather.

I'm keeping loads of cold flannels close by in order to keep calm, but it's really difficult to function.

Hi airyfairy,

that's awful, I never realized you ended up in hospital with heatstroke, how cruel this weather can be, I personally think each year is getting hotter and hotter, it's 30 degrees here at the moment and shows no sign of dropping.

I'm like you and do hardly anything in this weather, though on saturday I cleaned the house from top to bottom and felt like I'd just been bathing in a tub of oil, the sweat just poured off me in what felt like bucket fulls. 

I have to go for an eye test today, I'm dreading walking in the sun, but just hate wearing hats, so it will be a quick in and out and back home on the bus as quickly as possible.

Hope you manage to keep as cool as possible. Sorry about the rambling on, I think it's this weather playing tricks with my mind, I just need to write my feelings down.

Regardless of whether or not it's a rant, it was written well. Nice deviation from your normal stuff and good writing. I did notice that you could easily make a poem out of that if you wanted to. You can have a ranty, bitchy poem if you'd like. :)

Hi Trevor,

thankfully they were only your common garden ants that left me itching. they seem to have calmed down since Saturday evening. Those ants you mentioned sound horrific and I wouldn't want to come in contact with red ants, or those delta-winged horseflies. Your sister is right, but though I don't like killing creaturs myself, I also hate anything flying around my head, or crawling on my skin, it just gives me nightmares

I'm an autumn and winter lover, though spring is cool too, but summer just leaves me with feelings of dread each year. It's those people that have to work that I feel sorry for, though I was in my opticians and they're lucky enough to have air conditioning, it was wonderful walking into a friendly, cool clean air enviroment, I could have stayed there all afternoon.

Thank you for understanding and I'll definitely try to keep calm with a cuppa! wink

Hi there Hades,

I'm normally quite a calm person these days, but just sometimes need to keep a diary of certain weather conditions, that are over the top, the sun showing it's in charge is just one of those times I just had to record.

Thank you for reading and understanding my rant, it will be so good when this heat finally calms down and gives some respite...can't wait! smiley

Hi Jenny

The heat really is hard to cope with when it is so intense. But early in the morning it is very pleasant and late at night.  I must admit that my son bought us an air conditioner, so I am not suffering nearly as much as most people.

I know what you mean about the early morning, I hung my washing out at about 6 am this morning, it's always pleasant at that time.

You are so lucky having air conditioning, I think I'll have to look into getting it.

Hi Paul,

I never thought for one minute that this heat would go on for so long when I wrote this diary entry. I do feel for you, because I can't think or function, just don't know what to do with myself, can't even think of anything to write about. Don't even have a fan to cool me down, just cold wet flannels. but somehow they're not even helping anymore.

Hope you manage to have more luck than me with keeping cool Paul.

Dear diary...it's Friday 23rd July 2021. Hallelujah! It's getting cooler. So happy I did a dance around the house, freaking out to Led Zeppelin's Rock and Roll at 2.15pm. Now I'm hot again, but it was worth it just for the simple fact tomorrow it's supposed to get even cooler and it's going to rain...hopefully a down pour, we need it.
