Little Demons (2)

Bert closed his eyes tightly and, concentrating so hard that his face scrunched up like a discarded burger wrapper, focused on the frozen vegetable aisle in the local supermarket. 'They always do the frozen food last so she will either be there or at the checkout.' When he opened his eyes he was in fact, much to his surprise, in the frozen food aisle, however he was wedged between two large, lumpy packets of frozen peas. Shivering violently he wriggled his way free just in time to avoid having anther packet dropped on his head by a bored, middle aged shop assistant who was restocking the freezer.
After a quick glance around the immediate vicinity to check that no-one had seen him, he clambered out of the freezer, still shivering, water droplets sticking to his short, grey fur. He dropped to the floor, focused on the shelf above the freezer, disappeared then instantly reappeared on top of a box of fruit flavoured ice-pops high above the shoppers. Frantically he scanned the frozen aisles for the boy's mother. 'Where is she? Where is she?' Suddenly Bert spotted her turning into aisle fourteen; biscuits and confectionary.
He focused hard and appeared on the empty bit of the shelf where the fig biscuits should have been but were currently 'out of stock', right next to large packets of digestive biscuits all stacked on top of each other. Obviously stress improved his aim. He glanced up and saw that the boy's mother was now half way down the aisle, perusing a buyonegetonefree offer on the chocolate fingers.
As fast as he could he clambered up the large rolls of biscuits, is over large, flat feet slipping and sliding on the smooth wrappers. When he reached the summit of the biscuit mountain he slid down behind the top packet, braced his back against the back of the shelf, spat on his hands and placed them firmly against the shiny red wrapper.
Peering over the top, he watched the boy's mother approach. 'Here she comes,' he said to himself. 'Take it easy... Steady now... Not too soon...Almost there...NOW!' With a big grunt Bert shoved the packet as hard as he could, and watched satisfyingly as it tumbled down the pile and fell with a crunch on to the floor just behind the mother's trolley. As she rounded the corner she looked around to see what had fallen off the shelf and collided with the tower of '5 for only £3' tins of soup stacked neatly at the end of the aisle. There was a cacophony of crashing metal followed by the rumbling sound of tins rolling in all directions. 'That should keep her busy for a while.' grinned Bert as he dematerialised.
