DO YOU BELIEVE IN DRAGONS Part 1

This is a four part series of legend, lore, reality and imagination on the subject of dragons, aka dinosaurs. It is part fantasy, part fact, and part theory. It has been an interesting story to research and write; and having discussed this matter with a dragon I met some time ago, well, let me know what you think. Do you believe in dragons?
Do you believe in dragons, lake monsters, sea monster, strange gigantic creatures that live deep in our mountain forest, jungles and swamps? Dragons have been part of the folklore of human history for eons upon eons of time, since time first began. Could it be that dragons are very, very real?
What happened to all the dragons of long ago? Did they all, every last single one of them simply die with not one pair surviving to carry the species forward? I’m not ready to accept that. I think there is more to the story. Did they evolve into something else? That, I don’t believe for a single second. Maybe they just shrunk. They simply don’t grow as big in the 21st century as they grew in the 1st. We do have creatures that resemble descriptions of dragons from long ago; the lizards, salamanders, various birds, the dragonfly, the praying mantis, various fish in the sea, even the giraffe, the elephant and the rhino and a few other animals. Well, I don’t really think they shrunk. So, what did happen to all those dragons? I wanted to know. I decided to ask a dragon I happen to be acquainted with and see if I could learn the answer.
I have some thoughts of my own as well, though I admit it is all theory. Anyhow I thought I’d ask my dragon friend, Cosmos, and together we’ll share with you what we know or at least think.
Cosmos is a very wise and friendly dragon. I’m talking about the dragon I met when I was a little girl, probably about your age, Cosmos the Comtu Dragon. He lives in a place where the Connecticut River and the Black River meet between Vermont and New Hampshire. He is a very nice Dragon and he has a friend named Quinnie that lives in the Connecticut River near Bellows Falls and the Fish Ladder. They like fish and like to eat water plants like lily pads and arrowroot and cattails. I think you would like to meet them too. Anyhow, Cosmos and I had quite a conversation about dragons, aka dinosaurs, and I have my own thoughts too.
I would like to offer my own speculation, that being, that the dinosaurs of the past are the dragons of lore and legend and that maybe, just maybe there are still a few of them around. It is possible even if it doesn’t seem probable. Every now and then we discover something new out there that really surprises us; why not dragons?
I don’t believe that they died off all at once; one day they were here, the next day they were not. I am not convinced they were all wiped out by a comet striking the Earth or a great deluge that flooded the entire Earth. I don’t think there is any solid evidence of that but neither do I have the answer to what has happened. I’m only guessing too. Many have vanished but I believe some still remain.
There have been enough sightings of something out there to make me believe it is so. Not all of them can be hoaxes. Something very strange and unfamiliar is out there. I’ve seen them, these strange creatures, or I think I have. I’m pretty sure I was not just imagining things. I saw something. I would really like to believe these creatures still exist and I really wouldn’t be surprised if it is so. We already know for a fact that there are at least a few very ancient species of creatures still living among us and some of them have only been discovered again in the last 4 or 5 centuries.
Another thing we also need to remember is that not all dinosaurs were gigantic in size. Yes, some were, some were huge but several were not much bigger or even as large as many animals we are very familiar with today and some were much smaller than many of the creatures that live on Earth today. Many of these creatures weren’t any bigger than a Clydesdale horse, an elephant, a giraffe, an ostrich, an osprey and what about the alligator and crocodile and those giant turtles, even the smaller ones that can live for hundreds of years. You know, bigger than a beaver, smaller than a house. Some were even very small, maybe not even as big as your pet kitten or puppy or a barnyard hen.
There is a lot to learn about dragons (dinosaurs) the creatures of the very distant past. It is fascinating and the legends that surround them are even more fascinating. Stories like the tale of Black Sam Bellamy and the Sea Dragon, or giant panthers, bears, and other animals of unimaginable size, humanlike giants, and creatures like Champ and Memphre and so many others. It seems every nation, every group of people by race or ethnic origin all have their stories to tell about the dragons and there has to be some truth to it. Somebody saw something out there somewhere and so have I.
