The season of love

Once love swooped in with the swifts and swallows
And stayed for a season or a day;
Berried kisses in suntrap hollows
Promised consummation in the harvest hay.
For fair Aphrodite joined the hunt with Eros
And lovers lay spreadeagled in their net;
And if spring be the favoured time for lusty childbirth
Then summer was the season to lustfully beget.
Now love lies leering, sneering "Spit or swallow?"
In the aftermath of "Aftershock" melee;
And one must come and one must follow
And be spent and gone by break of day.
For fair Chlamydia haunts tavernas
And raves through the dances of the clubbing set;
And love lies with the beer cans in the airport trash bin
Or dispersed in the slipstream of the charter jet.
