‘They came for the Muslims,
And I was not a Muslim so I did not speak out’
And although I did not wear a burqua, I saw through veiled eyes,
The warning signs, the prowling beast,
Shaky hands, committing atrocities,
To the sound of drunken beatings,
Freedom dissolving like candle wax,
A distant memory, safer to bottle up our fears,
Leave them to rot, in the cellar, Along with the scrunched up letters stained with tears,
And abandoned prayer mats.
‘And then they came for us’
And although I covered myself in black,
Through the cracks I could see,
They were armed and ready to wage a war,
Against what I was unsure.
