"remains committed to closing the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay"
A British national, lays stripped naked, in a dingy cell, fit for no dog,
His eyes are bruised, and his hands are laden with blood,
His own or that from a guards knuckle he is unsure,
He has been held here for months upon months,
Without access to a lawyer, or the privilege of seeing his loved ones,
His only escape comes at night, when he dreams of the family he left behind,
And the sweet taste of lamb kebab, from days gone by fills his mouth; it does not last long,
Until the bitter taste of blood, disguise’s any former sensitivity.
Up until this moment, he has been a law abiding citizen,
His only crime the colour of his skin, and the religion of his fore fathers,
But in these bleak days, the world he once knew, full of beauty and kindness,
Has been stolen away from him, on the mistaken authority, of a foreign country,
Who delude themselves into carrying out these crimes against humanity,
In the name of protection; but this man is no terrorist,
the first time he has heard the ushering of Al-Queda have been here,
Were they have been spat at him, through gritted teeth and brittle.
His weary hands, slung at his side, are covered in scars,
Like a map etched with reminders of the injustice he has endured,
He weeps not only in pain, but at the loss of something altogether more valuable,
That of hope, that in this enlightened age that we live in,
The so called democracies that lead the world stage,
are capable of such prejudice over people who, by right of birth are not only their equals,
But better men, as when they sleep at night it is dreams of torture that plague both of them,
But only one awakes with the stings of tears, compelled by callings of his own conscience.
