Do not pounce upon me roughly cracking ribs to bellow breath into my bronchi,

No standing back from thud and thwack, will shock me into thanks when woken rudely.

Just realised what DNR stands for. We had to explain it to mum-in-law concerning her failing husband who couldn't have understood, then her doctor talked her through it for herself. Rhiannon

Hard to make that explanation, Rhiannon. A friend of mine recently singed one for himself, his health failing beyond hope of recovery and life had become unbearable. It was the right thing for him to do and everyone respected that. And knowing his wishes somehow made the letting go more bearable, too. Thanks for reading, and for sharing.

A difficult decision, surely...

Thanks for your thoughts, Terry. It probably is a difficult decision, but then a DNR order doesn't kill you, it just stops them bringing you back if you've died, so I think you are right - up to the person in question - taking in their circumstances.

This one brought back memories for me. When my father was dying, and had already been resusitated once a few weeks previously, and had had surgery, which was only for a brief respite - the doctor called his wife and me into the corridor, as he slipped into a coma. Do we resusitate? He asked. My father would have said YES. He wasn't ready to die, and didn't think he would. Just hours before he was commenting on how the Minnesota Twins had won their baseball game, and how the "red alert" signal on the speakers wasn't for him. But we said NO. I said it loudest, although it wasn't my call to make. I think his wife always felt that it was the wrong decision.

It's so hard to make that decision for someone, but though he didn't want to, or think he'd die, your father also didn't know he'd slip into a coma. To bring someone back with only the prospect of dying again would have been cruel, I think, or the doctors wouldn't have been asking about resus. Seems like one of those situations where no matter what we decide, we'll always beat ourselves up afterwards.

Anyway its well described. If one registers for a card or whatever you get I think you must be sure of your situation.

Here. I'm told we can register for Euthanasia, but I'm in no hurry to find out where to apply!

But of course there are many 'conditions' before it is accepted and the doctors and hospitals don't have to do it if they don't agree in Euthanasia.
