SOMEONE SAID

Someone said,
Nothing in life brings so much joy,
And nothing in life brings so much pain,
As love.
We crave the pleasure of,
Warm closeness,
Shared secrets,
Fun,
Laughter,
Caring,
Giving,
Young or old,
Family, friends or lovers,
True happiness comes only with love.
But there's a price to pay,
Misunderstandings,
Mistakes,
Loss,
Death,
Pain,
So bad you want to rip your heart out,
But the problem isn't in there,
So you can't get it out
Someone said,
Love thy neighbour,
And stick a time bomb in your own heart,
There's the rub in the Garden of Eden.
Yet we must still love someone,
To feel alive,
Cautiously,
Selectively,
We push past the fear,
Of that lesser pain,
Of rejection,
Timidly reaching out,
Afraid of inevitable loss,
Yet needing to love,
Be loved.
Someone said,
Twas better to have loved and lost,
Than never to have loved at all,
No-one is convinced,
Once they feel the pain of loss,
Yet we carry on,
Choosing our friends and lovers,
Carefully.
Someone said
The best things in life are free
Well that's a downright lie,
We all scream 'It's not fair!',
When life's ticket man comes,
Yet we happily pay,
Less painful prices,
For more trivial rewards,
Moments of heartfelt agony,
For moments of heartfelt joy,
What fairer exchange,
Could there be?
Someone said,
There was a carpenter,
That loved the whole world,
I bet crucifixion was a breeze,
After that.
Yet love is life,
Life is love,
All else is limbo,
Even pain makes you feel,
More alive,
Than emptiness,
Maybe someone was right,
After all.
