Standing malancholy and forlorn
on the side of the highway, alone
A mighty truck passed me by
loaded and dripping with fresh cut wood
It seemed to me to be bloodied
and yet fresh as it bled out
it called out my name
but I was rooted in place
I saw a saw had cut a tree down
yet I did not move from my spot
what could I do ?A brother had died today
and maybe I would die next
So I closed my heart to the world
and thickened my bark around me
and as my shadow deepened
so to did the horror of this place

That's good - we start by assuming that "I" represents a person, then we realise that it is another tree, then that the whole poem could apply to people anyway - have I understood you correctly?
