The roman villa
As I linger in the ruins
Of an ancient Roman site.
A mirage of its former days
Suddenly come to light.
I viewed a large square court yard
Where flower beds were laid.
And roses coiling pillars
Of surrounding colonnades.
Inside where oil lamps flickered
Giving Light to gathering Gloom.
I saw furnishings and statues
Exalting every room.
Then came the sound of footsteps
Treading mosaic floors.
And whispers voiced in Latin
Echoed along corri - doors.
Too soon the images shifted
Into crumbled stone and pillar.
Just fragments of another time
Of this once, proud roman villa.
