The Owlers Wife
My Jemmys out tonight down Tenterden way
a visiting his Father took sick
at least I'm to say it
or a drinking in Horsmonden telling tales
with other brawny boys from the iron works
or with a cousin mending sails
for a barge on the Medway
taking apples from Tonbridge
and if worst comes to it I'm to cry
and talk of a widow in Kilndown
telling I'm going to take this spoon to his
ears so I am
but he is never in Hawkhurst or Groombridge
nor knows Fairall or any of the gentlemen
Oh no
and the lace at my neck is from
my old mistress in the city
a rich old dame
