My Childhood Friend.

My childhood friend.
My childhood friend I met way back,
when i was barely six,
He joined me in the sandpit,
for a game of pick-up-sticks.
My childhood friend was with me,
when my dog was put to sleep,
He told me that old Shep was fine,
in heaven watching sheep.
My childhood friend was listening,
when i had my first real kiss.
He laughed and told me calmly,
there were better things than this.
My childhood friend stood by me,
when i made my girl, my wife.
He held the ring, made the toast,
shared moments from my life.
My childhood friend played uncle,
to my little girl and boy,
He let them ride upon his back,
and filled them both with joy.
My childhood friend grew poorly,
as this winter came around,
He passed away within his dreams,
and now lies neath the ground.
My childhood friend is gone now,
with Shep, he sits above,
I think about him often,
with sadness and with love.
My childhood friend walked with me.
round life's every little bend.
I'll never have another one,
not like my childhood friend.
