Jesus was a Rebel

A brief history of Christendom

Jesus was a rebel,
He came to set slaves free,
That’s why they killed him,
By nailing him to a tree.

Then they cut him down
And covered him in gold,
And put him on the altar, 
So, his favours could be sold.

It being the way of the world,
That  the Bishop and the King 
Held down their positions so 
The poor could kiss their rings

But when the poor complained,
That they’d not enough to eat,
Their priest explained that first
He should wash their feet.

When the lies became exposed,
When nailed to the church door,
Their fear was in being deposed,
And the answer to that was war.

So, they took him off the altar
To blazon him on their shields,
To justify this by such palter
Their ride to the killing fields

Throughout this they forgot
That for all the worlds sin
He was still upon the cross,
A slap in the face of Calvin

When they finally fell apart
Being now exhausted, they
Sailed away with their cant,
As a creed to be exported.

Setting forth to be so bold
With the sword and cross to
The New World from the old,
But their god was Thanatos.

When the slaves complained
Of what they now lacked, the
Overseer simply laughed and
Got on whipping their backs.

The same for the first nations, 
A people now long displaced,
With a sop for being churched,
In the white man’s salvation.

On and on it went with some
As slaves and some nearly free
But for the men of merchandise
It was as God ordained it to be.

Along came the bearded man,
Whose study of nature was heard
By gainsaying the seven days
As little more than hearsay.

Their world became split in two
On the subject of what was true;
Was it after all at best a fable thus
Making Bishop Ussher disabled?

Meanwhile on Dover Beach  
The sea of faith receded, 
As a purpose now in life
It was no longer heeded.

Came next the man sans socks
Who delivered a terrible shock,
Time and space were relevant,
Leaving God as just a revenant.

Then it was said that God is dead,
Bringing an upsurge in ideologies
That became all too soon simply 
Secularised debased theologies.

For all that some still disagreed,
Looking back to the original story
When Jesus died upon the cross,
To then to rise and save in glory.

And for all that we shall be free;
When He leaped from the tree,
To invite us all to dance,
In Gods loving abundance.

For  Jesus was rebel, 
He came to set slaves free,
That’s why they cannot kill him
Because in him all can be free.
