They were crying out for employees in most sectors of the economy, as far as he could make out, so why didn’t wages rise to encourage the employees (servants!) to move into them? Would that have the desired effect?
But Britain was finding that you could not manufacture doctors (or nurses) fast enough in super-efficient post Thatcher Britain! Evidently there was something deeper wrong with the soul of Britain! You had to make people want to be Doctors (or nurses) in large enough numbers, or it wasn’t going to happen. Most people could see how stressful A&E Departments and a lot of hospital sectors at the moment, so it wasn’t really encouraging them to fill those professions. The same idea probably applied to other professions also, where there were shortages of labour!
Alfred would be sure to invite Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss, the current Tory Prime Ministerial candidates, onto the Round table so they could impart their own wisdoms, and be part of the solution, whichever of them was to win in the internal Tory Party leadership election, to take over from Boris!
(If it had been completely up to Alfred, he would have given the outgoing Boris a place on the Round Table too, to make up for being forced to step down from the Prime Ministerial position in such an unpleasant way! Boris, being such a tough public schoolboy type, didn’t seem to cry (unlike Mrs Thatcher who had been visibly upset when they told her she had to go!). His stiff upper lip had remained very stoic, but deep inside he must have been very upset that his dreams of being a great and heroic Prime Minister had been cut so short. Alfred could not help but feel very sorry for him, on a personal level, but it would not have seemed right for him to be on the Round Table. Unfortunately he would have to accept that he was now ‘History’, and allow the new potential representatives of his Party (the political one, not the after work piss ups which had so damaged his reputation!) Rishi and Liz to be the potential leaders of the future!)
To be even handed he would invite Keir Starmer, the Labour leader, too, and even the Scottish Nationalists, as long as they agreed to be constructive, and didn’t go on about Scottish Independence all the time! And maybe the Liberal Democrats could come too, as long as they behaved themselves? In a sense it was a case of the more the merrier!
The Great King Arthur himself always did his best to involve even his greatest enemies, and his rivals, in his counsels, and look what good it did do his Kingdom, until his bastard son (P.C. check - unofficial son!) Mordred decided to take over in a coup, with the Lady Morgana (his Mother) who had seduced Arthur in disguise (purporting to be the lovely Guinevere when she was not!) They took advantage of his good nature and trashed the whole Kingdom (a bit like the modern day Vladimir Plutin trashing Ukraine, and severely diminishing the honour of his own country Russia by so doing!)
