Progress In The Supermarket?

Progress In The Supermarket?
Dreams of being something when he grows up.
Everything falls into place, everyone has a place in society.
All grow up to be somebody of use.
Just choose a career and find your place.
Easy!
Works in a supermarket for years, a nice job,
with nice people and plenty of friends to talk to.
Then as society progresses more competitor chains come in from abroad.
Before too long competition is getting stiff,
Some chains have to close or sell up.
It’s getting difficult to make profits,
They all have to cut staff,
And make the workers who stay work harder.
An older person is in the supermarket,
No we can’t pack your bags for you,
No we can’t get someone to carry your bags out,
There’s no one to ask when the food shelves have been changed around.
Can you be a bit faster please?
There’s a big queue behind you!
Can you stop talking please,
This is not a social club.
The check-out assistant is not a social worker, or a friend.
They are workers whose jobs are on the line if they don’t work fast enough.
One day we will all work ourselves to death!
Every year more staff lose their jobs.
Make the store an Express,
With less items for sale, prices less competitive.
Not enough range for the old person,
Who has to go further afield to get the cheaper goods,
Which are no longer in the local store.
More supermarkets, less staff, but further away from where the people live?
Shopping becomes more of an effort.
The employees are back on the dole,
Trying to find a job.
Where there were jobs aplenty there are none to be had.
We’re making it harder for ourselves,
Harder to work, harder to shop, harder to find a job, harder to live!
And oh, don’t you know,
women can’t retire at 60 any more,
and men can’t retire at 65.
Now we’re all working until we’re 67!
