As I fish fur from my coffee mug

the rhythm of your purr's like the chug

of the ferry bringing people home

or strangers, who from far places come

here, where time is gentle as the stroke

of light over hills that day awoke

across the sea in pink rose petals

falls on the town and softly settles

as winter kitchens mist with kettles

 

Let them unwind like near broken clocks

heal deep-hidden wounds and unpick locks

into childhood's hope where welcome's warm

as the plush thrumming curve of your form

stepping daintily onto my lap

while on the keyboard I try to tap

lines intended to be meaningful

but as you find balance, kneed and pull

reveal me to be a cat owned fool

You've pulled it off really well here. I stepped the other side of the fulcrum yesterday for that very reason. I love the plush thrumming curve. Altogether nicely done.

As another cat owned fool, I very much enjoyed this.  The image of unwinding like near broken clocks was particularly striking (oh dear, no pun intended) and there was something about the rhythm and the sensuousness of the language that really did make me feel I was relaxing. Although it was posted on Saturday, it's been a lovely Sunday morning read.

I confess I'm more of a dog than a cat person - unless they're Big cats! - but this is lovely. Effortlessly long sentences with interesting ideas like the ferry bit or the clock bit. And you've captured the rhythm of the cat's purring throughout. I just looked for a cat face on the smileys but sorry there does not seem to be one!

Wow, thakyou Insert :0) Tina is sitting on my mouse hand this minute. How did you know she is black and white?

Thankyou Catherine, that is praise coming from you! I'm a dog person, too, but my son is not, so we have cats. But Tina is the most dog like cat I've met. She was a stray and when she came here, though friendly to us she didn't pur for a month or two, and was very bossy to our other cat. Now she likes to go outside with him and follows him around like he was an older brother, though she can't help jumping on his tail sometimes as it is so enticingly fluffy. She has a thing about Wotsits (I wonder if school children fed them to her when she was stray) and when my son (12 then) was trying to eat some sitting down, as she kept trying to put her paw inside the bag, he stood up to finish them, and Tina leapt up from the floor to grab one on the way from bag to mouth, at least 4 feet into the air and precision grabbing as he didn't have a scratch

What an effective use of rhyme, like a cat marking time.  I just love that last line.  smiley I do like that pur looks like fur - but I do miss that extra r...

Ah I love this, brings back the memories of being a cat owned fool so vividly. I still miss mine too much to entertain getting another. It's a quiet, calming (mostly) and unique kind of companionship which you've summed up beautifully here.

Thankyou for your kind comment Jane. Agree it takes a long time to want another animal companion. All the cats I know and have known have such different and equally strong characters

Loved this. Conjures up a lot of warm images and confirms my belief that cats are pretty special (and dogs, too, of course).

This works real well... lots of lilting 's' sounds in the first stanza, rhyme works well and adds a nice melodic quality, 'plush thrumming curve of your form' is lovely. Well done

Lovely rhyming and such gently flowing words make this piece a delight to read. Not to mention the fact that I'm "mommy" to five of the little darlings! Wonderful poem, so glad I had the chance to read it this morning!

Your descriptions are wonderful.  A really good pussy-cat read. My wife and I recently had to help our precious cat of 19 years stay with us, yes, had to help her on her way to heaven.

Richard, thankyou for reading and commenting. I am so sorry to hear about your cat. It is the most terrible thing to lose a close friend, whether animal or human. 19 is a great age, you must have loved her so much and looked after her so well.  I miss the animals I have lost as if they were family they are such an important part of life and the decision to end suffering is the hugest resposinibility. My son persuaded me to adopt the cat, Tina, that this is about, after we lost my cat to a mystery illness which the vet couldn't cure. Tina is so full of energy she took some getting used to, and now she has settled in and is part of our life too. I hope one day you will be able to open your home and heart again to a creature in need as it sounds like you and your wife are such kind people any cat would love to live with you :0)

Yummy poem. You get a lot into the lines, misty winter seaside mornings, warm welcomes, 'plush' yes cats often exude glossy tactile luxury. Do I envy them? If a diet of Whiskas and Dry Munchies would make me beautiful and purry , what would I do smiley
