cat on the bed looks up

as I go in

 

he lies on the floor

curled as if fallen

like a leaf still

in school uniform

 

the chrysalis of his face

asleep

 

next time I go in  he's on the bed

curled round the cat

both breathing softly

you've captured that special thing (not sure what to call it) that anyone who's ever looked into the room of a sleeping child will experience. Especially if they have cats. Or dogs who think they're a lot smaller than they actually are. Or indeed both!

Thankyou! It is a special thing, isn't it? He moans about his cat (big fluffy ginger and white) going in the middle of his bed, but he doesn't like sleeping without him :0)

Yes, a lovely memory to 'catch', both the simple picture and the sudden relaxation of back home after the turmoil of the outer world at that age. I liked the metaphor of 'chrysalis' too.

I've been printing out (large, poor eyesight, very poor hearing) some verses my mother-in-law (99) used to write as she enjoyed little walks etc. She sees her 'nom-de-plume' on them and says oh, she miust have written that, and that she certainly likes it! Can't clearly remember the writing, but the intonation she puts in as she reads, shows the memory of the picture she was wanting to capture is there somewhere. There is also a funny one she wrote about her husband, which has helped when she is inclined to just remember the arguments they had! Rhiannon

Thankyou Rhiannon, wasn't sure it was enough of a thing to make a poem. But like you are doing with your mother in law, it is good to be remember happy times. It is a lovely thought of yours to do that for her - calling her back to herself with her own "voice"

when they are asleep is kind of like a raindrop hanging, so fragile and perfect, then they wake up SPLASH :0)

Soft and beautiful, I love the description of your child as a fallen leaf and his precious relationship with an animal. Those moments are the best life has to offer.
