Through the window, into the World

The birds
are fighting outside my window
one’s got a knife
one’s got a gun
guess who won?
There’s a smell in the air
It was set free some time ago
‘Leave now and never come back’
it was told
‘Your job is to let everyone know I’m here
good or bad’
The dogs
are howling outside my gate
I listen closer and recognise a tune
‘Swinging on a star. Or would you rather be a dog?’
It’s the summer air
everything in it
all at once
mixed and mixing
The cats
are adventuring in my garden
They’ve got size 0.1 hiking boots on and compasses at the ready
‘Where to ol’ boy?’
meows Tom to Bengal
It’s joined the air
entered the real world
It’s on its own
nervous and full of purpose
The businessman
is back from work
his shoes have disappeared
his feet are red and soar
He takes them off
hands them to the maid
to fix this and stitch up that for tomorrow
It’s tickling the air
getting it lively
interested
buzzing with fascination
-a feeling-pleasure-it brought, before it went on its way
The children
are on the trampoline
going so high
they sit on a cloud
rest for days
then come back down
eating white puffy ice cream
It travels
over the tall blades of grass
they lift their noses high
pulling at their roots
getting straight
trying to capture its fragrance for one moment before it’s carried off in the smiling wind
The house wife
is at home flying around
bumping her head on the ceiling
getting her foot caught in the sink
Not long now
‘DING’
It’s ready
All this I see through my window
top floor
below and above chimneys blowing
green
purple
yellow
and blue
smoke into the rainbow coloured sky
There’s a plane
coming straight toward me
through the smoke
If I could let go of
all this fear
all this doubt
all this anxiety
I really could fly
I close my eyes
reach my hand through the soft glass
Someone from the plane has done the same
they’ve got me
I’m flying
A sniff
‘Sniff’
it’s drawn them all
