Chapter One
The East Coast
It all started last summer when we went to visit my grandfather George on the East Coast. He is an inventor who is always working on a project and last summer he didn’t have time to come see us. So, my parents decided to take us all to his house, instead.
As a result, my brother Zach, my sister Blinn and I left our sunny California house in early June to go spend the two months of our summer vacation “back East”, like my father would say. Our mother stayed with us the whole time while my father went back to work and came to visit every other weekend.
This was the first time we spent our whole summer away from home. From the moment we landed and stepped outside of the plane, we couldn’t stand still. On our way to the baggage claim, Zach kept running in zigzags in the terminal and Blinn kept on talking a mile a minute.
“Okay, Guys!” said our annoyed mother as she was retrieving our suitcases from the baggage belt. “I know it’s exciting to be in a different place, but you have got to bring it down a notch or two. PLEASE.”
“Your mother is right.” said our father. “Grandpa doesn’t like this kind of agitation in his house, especially now that he’s working on a new project.”
“Is it another one of his inventions?” I asked my dad. “The last one was so awesome!”
“You mean the one that allowed people to hear and understand animals?” asked Zach.
“Yeah, that was just so unbelievably cool!” replied Blinn.
“I don’t know if it’s another invention he’s working on.” said our dad, pushing the loaded cart of bags toward the car rental counters. “He didn’t say. He just mentioned that he was going to be really busy this summer.”
“Well, he must be working on something big or else he would have come to California for the summer as usual.” I stated.
Once we got the bags loaded in the trunk of our rental car and we were all buckled up, my dad drove us out of the airport and took the direction of our grandfather’s house.
We couldn’t wait to go explore the house by the lake and its surroundings.
